The movie stars Tom Berenger (Platoon, The Big Chill), Barbara Hershey (The Last Temptation of Christ, Beaches), Kurtwood Smith (Robo Cop, That 70's Show), and Wilford Bremley (The China Syndrome, The Firm)
The plot of the movie is Berenger, a cowboy/mountain man, and Hershey, a teacher and Indian expert, go in search of a lost "tribe" of Indian soldiers. They find the soldiers. Smith plays Berenger ex father-in-law, the daughter died, and Brimley narriates the stroy as it was told to him (or was it just a tall tale.)
I rated this movie as an A. I would put it at the top of my Netflix account. The acting is way above avarage. The story line reminds me of Dances with Wolves. "Last" band of free Indians as a result of the slaughter of indginous peoples. White people being folded into the ranks. The woman leads knowing the language. The male leads comming in later.
A lot of times I get upset with people takng the same plot and making two movies. But in the case of Dances and Dogmen it works for me. You could almost call Dogmen a sequel to Dances. What would of happened if the Indians in Dances were not captured/surendered and if they were the same tribe. Dances takes place in the 1800's (I think) and Dogmen take place in modern times.
The only thing I dont like about the movie is Smith's character may not be nessary to be related to Berenger. I suspose he is in there to supliment the feeling of loss that Beringer has over the death of his wife but that was estableshed well in a scene with Hershey.
Just to recap if you liked Dances with Wolves put Last of the Dogmen at the top of what ever ovie service you have I don't think you will be disapointed.
